Notes: Roger and Rita Porter bought the farm in 1968 from Clarence and Mildred Redwine. The Redwing's had moved many years earlier from Minnesota to Rowan County. they raised their family on the farm, which originally covered about half of Pennington flat. After their retirement from farming, the Redwine's sold off portions of the farm.

The barn was built in the early 1950's and was used as a tobacco and stock barn. The Porters also used it as a tobacco barn, but currently it is used for farm storage. Their grandchildren enjoy playing in the barn, especially on a swing that has been hung from the rafters.

The pattern used on the barn quilt square is matched to an actual quilt that Rita had been quilting in her spare time. Roger's Grandmother Mae (Ma) Graham, who always did a lot of quilting, gave them the quilt top in 1984, the year before she died. Ma's great -granddaughter ( now Valerie Malone) bedroom was in those colors , and Ma made it to go there.

Rita had planned to submit a pattern from another quilt that Ma had made for them when Rita and Roger had moved into their new house. (Their former farmhouse had been torn down and a new one built). But Rita couldn't find where she had stored it. When Larry Wilson, A Foothills Quilt Trail Committee member stopped by to take a picture of the quilt, he saw the quilt Rita was working on. He thought it had a pretty design and bright colors. Both agreed to submit it for the project.
